You may have noticed that driverless car technology has become something of a media sensation.
Recently, Chinese tech giant Baidu took things to the next level after completing successful road tests for its driverless car.
Now, this wasn’t just your ordinary test involving straight roads and no traffic.
This test was completed in what the company called “mixed” road conditions. It merged into traffic, completed lane changes, and understood how to complete U-turns. Many other driverless models cannot complete such arduous tasks as of yet.
And things are even more impressive when you take into account the fact that the car was tested in Beijing, which is notorious for having some of the worst, most unpredictable roadways and drivers in the world.
The 3D mapping system allows the car to see lanes on the road, other vehicles, and various obstacles that might be present.
But what will really prove the mapping systems are as good as we hear are road tests on paths with worn lane markings, or perhaps country roads… which is where other driverless vehicle models have experienced a lot of shortcomings.
Daimler, Robot Taxi, Google, Tesla, and a few more, are currently working on improving this technology.
By now it’s pretty much common knowledge that Google’s cars have been in a number of accidents, though the company claims they were all a result of human error of some kind, rather than a fault with the cars themselves.
Even Tesla recently had to scale a few things back (in Hong Kong, due to its traffic laws) after its recent update reported drivers had been lulled into a false sense of security due to its self-steering and lane changing abilities.
And if there’s one thing you can bank on, it’s that this technology will be improved going forward.
The good part is that you don’t have to wait very long. In fact, one of my colleagues, Christian DeHaemer, is putting the finishing touches on a brand new investment report that will highlight the best investments in driverless tech.
You can fully expect to receive his report Tuesday morning.
